How to Buy Christmas Lights for Cheap

Budget by the foot

What Christmas lights cost per foot

Measure the roofline, multiply by a per-foot cost, and you have a budget before you open a single product page. Here are the per-foot numbers for C9 socket wire at three spacings.

Updated September 27, 2026. Prices checked September 27, 2026.

Per-foot cost built from parts

Each foot of a C9 run needs socket wire plus one bulb and one clip for every socket on that foot. At 12-inch spacing that is one socket per foot, at 15-inch it is 0.8, and at 24-inch it is 0.5. The table uses O clips as the clip; plugs and cord are a small fixed cost covered further down. Prices as listed at Christmas Light Supplier on September 27, 2026.

SpacingSocket wireWire per ftPer ft, pack pricesPer ft, case prices
12" spacing (1 bulb per foot)$275.00 / 1,000'$0.275$1.322$1.141
15" spacing (0.8 bulbs per foot)$240.00 / 1,000'$0.240$1.078$0.933
24" spacing (0.5 bulbs per foot)$289.00 / 1,000'$0.289$0.813$0.722

Spacing is the biggest budget lever you control. Moving from 12-inch to 15-inch spacing removes one bulb and one clip in every five feet; moving to 24-inch halves them. On a 200-foot roofline, case-priced parts come to about $228.20 at 12-inch spacing, $186.56 at 15-inch and $144.40 at 24-inch, before plugs.

Kit prices per foot

Kits roll plugs, stakes and zip cord into the price, so their per-foot figure is an all-in number.

Longer kits cost less per foot because the fixed parts are spread over more wire. The 250-foot kits sit around $1.700 per foot, while the 1,000-foot 15-inch kit is $1.299.

How to measure a roofline for a budget

  1. Measure each straight run: gutters, rakes (the sloped edges of gables), ridges and any peaks you plan to outline. A tape along the ground under the gutter gives a good gutter length; rake lengths can be estimated from the roof pitch or measured from a ladder.
  2. Add them up and add about 10 percent for corners, drops between levels and slack at connections.
  3. Multiply by the per-foot figure for your spacing. Add plugs: each separate run needs one male plug where it takes power and one female plug where it ends or connects onward. At $0.760 per plug in 50-packs, ten runs add about $15.20.
  4. If runs are far from an outlet, price SPT-1 zip cord at $0.312 per foot for custom leads instead of buying extra-long extension cords.

Worked example: a 160-foot ranch roofline

Take a single-story house with 160 feet of gutter and rake, plus 10 percent slack, for 176 feet. At 15-inch spacing that needs 141 sockets. Buying a full 1,000-foot spool leaves a lot of spare wire, so compare two routes. Route one is the 250' 15" kit at $425.00, which covers the whole house with wire to spare. Route two is building from a 1,000' spool at $240.00 plus 6 packs of 25 of bulbs ($119.70) and 2 packs of 100 of O clips ($49.90), which totals $409.60 before plugs but leaves 800-plus feet of wire for other projects. For a single house the kit is the lower cash outlay; the spool makes sense if you will light several houses or add more over the years.

Mini lights are priced per strand, not per foot. A 4-inch spacing mini strand is a 25-foot strand at $15.00, or $0.600 per foot as a single, and $0.498 per foot bought by the case.

Frequently asked questions

How much do C9 Christmas lights cost per foot?

Built from case-priced parts on September 27, 2026, C9 LED lights cost about $1.141 per foot at 12-inch spacing, $0.933 at 15-inch and $0.722 at 24-inch, plus plugs.

Which C9 bulb spacing is cheapest?

Wider spacing is cheaper because it uses fewer bulbs and clips per foot. 24-inch spacing uses half as many bulbs as 12-inch. Many rooflines use 12 or 15 inches for a fuller line.

How many C9 bulbs do I need for 100 feet?

About 100 at 12-inch spacing, 80 at 15-inch and 50 at 24-inch. Add a few spares for replacements.
